    Hello,

My name is Katherine Barnes and I am an American study abroad student with SIT in Amsterdam. My project advisor is Dr. Katharina-Lee Weille.

I am conducting an oral history of survivor experiences with support services, reporting avenues, and their perspectives on healing journeys and justice. We would not be discussing your actual experiences of sexual assault. The aim of this project is to add a survivor narrative that does not focus on harm, but rather on the journey afterwards.

I would be looking to chat with 2-5 survivors who would get more information on what an oral history collection is, what this project is for, who I am, the work I do, a detailed consent form, and an explanation of what the interview process would look like before you agree to be interviewed.

If you are interested please contact me by e-mail. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have before you decide to participate or not.

Some more information about the project:

    • The interview will be around two hours and will be conducted over the phone, Skype or in person in a place of your choice.
    • The interview will be in English, as I do not speak Dutch fluently.
    • The participant has to be 18 years or older and identifies him or herself to be a survivor of sexual abuse. You don’t have to be a native English speaker but the length of the interview and the nature of the questions are such that your speaken English has to be good.
    • The information used will be gathered to form an oral history of survivor experiences and thoughts surrounding reporting and support services, healing journeys, and ideas on justice. The idea is that these oral histories will fill the blanks that are often left open in most research based on sexual assault: survivor voices. The project is published within SIT’s library and some pieces may be requested by ATRIA’s archive (the gender studies library in Amsterdam).
    • All participants will be anonymous except for me, Katherine. For the project you will be given a fake name and no identifying factors will be used. Once the interviews have been transcribed, all notes and recordings will be destroyed immediately.
    • If you change your mind, I am more than happy to destroy your consent form and remove your interview from my oral history collection. The project is due on 12 May, 2019 and interviews cannot be withdrawn after that date.

If you are interested please contact me by e-mail. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have before you decide to participate or not.
